CASB Report April 2002

Highlights for Division Meeting

·         Completed compressing all available scans of UKST_IR plates and archiving them onto CD and MOD.

·         OATo staff completed plate processing and proper motion reduction of the NGP area, selected 200 white dwarf candidates, and confirmed several new WDs from spectroscopy at La Palma.

Community Affairs and Communications

·         During a two week visit at STScI R. Smart and T. Franconieri, in collaboration with OPO  produced the audio for the GSC II multimedia CDROM. The latest, and almost final, version is available at ftp.to.astro.it in astrometry/smart/gsc2m.zip. Any changes or corrections need to be sent to Ricky by May 10th when the master will be produced.

Project Management and Technical Infrastructure

·         Volpicelli continued comparison of Objectivity and MS SQLserver 2000 for GALEX/GSC-II.

·         Chris Hanley began working half-time for CASB April 1.  He will close out his WFC3 responsibilities by the end of May.

MISSION SUPPORT

HST Operations

·         Reviewed 9 new Guide Star Problem Reports (GSPRs) this period.  Six of these were fine lock failures and one was a false lock. Another was too faint, probably because the GS is blended on the DSS image, resulting in an overestimate of the brightness in the GSC. The Tycho Catalog entry for the last GS lists a significant proper motion.  Filed a Bad GS Alert for each of the GSs.

·         Continuing the coding and testing of the port of Getimage from UNIX/VMS to Windows NT. Now waiting for the completion of the RaidTec array to be ready to be accessed within Windows, this is expected within a couple of weeks.  In addition, began looking into making the keywords consistent in the Guidestar Header files; still analyzing the problem.

·         Occasionally answering questions from the APT team about the Bright Object Tool.

·         HUGS2 report accepted by Hubble Division –implementation begun.

NGST Development Studies

                                      DIGITIZED SKY SURVEY

Plate Scanning

·         Continued scanning the POSS-I O survey on GAMMA1.

·         Received a POSS-II N plate from Palomar for rescanning.

·         All the POSS-II N plates taken with the UKST are currently at ESO for copying. Delivery to STScI may take two months.

·         Grade A or B plates have now been taken for all UKST-IR fields except for field 1.  Some of these have now arrived at ROE.

GAMMA Microdensitometer Systems

·         Replaced and adjusted the x-drive actuator on GAMMA1, after a scan failure due to excess motor current caused by a failed bearing. Resumed scanning on GAMMA1.

·         GAMMA2 is still down; performed no production scans on GAMMA2 throughout the period.

Data Compression/CD Production

·         Completed compressing all available scans of UKST_IR plates and archiving them onto CD and MOD.

·         Completed copying the last few available XDSS CDROM's to the CASB RAIDTEC from the jukeboxes.

·         A total of 1288 CDROMs with 837 GB of compressed files have been transferred.

·         Stored CDROM's originally in the CASB jukeboxes in plate vault cabinets.

·         Resumed compressing scans of the POSS-I O plates.

·         Continued low-level rationalization of MOD archive.

GSC-II

Plate Processing and COMPASS Database

·         Continued loading and matching for most of the month.

·         Completed processing all available POSS-II N scans.

·         Installed new backup software on the COMPASS database server and began to backup the entire system.

·         The COMPASS database server experienced a hardware failure of one of the RAID Controller cards.  The system was down for several days.  Dell replaced the card and normal operations have resumed.

·         The OATo internal Report "Statistical Survey of the Inhomogeneities of the GSC2 Catalog" has been made available at http://www.to.astro.it/astrometry/2001_pub.html.

CALIBRATIONS: Astrometry

CALIBRATIONS: Classification

·         Investigation of some odd classification results encountered by the OATo team led to an analysis of the DID files to determine the proportion of plates that were processed with the original version of the classification task. That version used one decision tree instead of five, and did not implement region-averaging to eliminate the blockiness observed at region boundaries. The vast majority of the plates had been classified with the original version of the task: only 23% had had the new version run. This provides an additional impetus for re-classifying in the database.

·         While R. Smart was visiting from OATo, he and V. Laidler spent much time working on the classification paper. This effort included experiments on defect counts, and distances between children in a family.

CALIBRATIONS: Photometry (GSPC-II and DSS-I and -II)

·         Obtained the CTIO 36-inch telescope on April 9th for the GSPC2 program; could not observe due to the weather conditions.

·         Fixed the astrometry for the field XP283 reported as wrong earlier this year; sent data to OATo to correct the catalogue.

GSC-II Science

·         White Dwarf Search (OATo). Completed plate processing and proper motion reduction for almost 500 square-degrees towards NGP. Selected about 200 candidates for spectroscopic follow-up.

·         Carried out spectroscopic observations on April 16,17 and 18 with the 3.6 m TNG at La Palma (Canarias). The run was successful and several new WD's have been discovered. Preliminary analysis indicates that many of them appear very cool. Carried out NIR JHK photometry for the coolest objects.

Low priority program to rescan crowded fields (|b|<30) originally done with 25 mu scans.  The total number of S scans includes the 2 for the LMC and SMC plus 4 others with |b|>30 performed for research or STIS BOP support.  Another 30 plates have been added to replace those that were repaired before inclusion in DSS-I.
  • S2. This survey is an on-going low level-of-effort collaboration between the STScI and the AAO.
  • S3. Low priority scans of the POSS-I -24 deg and -30 deg zones.
  • S4. Includes recent scans of better grade plates.
  • S5.  Low priority scans of the moderately short exposure R plates from the SERC I/SR Atlas of the Milky Way.
  • S6.  Includes UKST-IR plates from the SERC I/SR Atlas of the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds (1978-1985) and the I-Survey of the Southern Sky (1990-xx).
