CASB Report July 2002

Highlights for Division Meeting

·         Received, scanned and archived the last available POSSII N plate.

Community Affairs and Communications

·         (OATo) Developing the jacket and face print for the gsc2m CD-rom. Duplication is scheduled for mid August.

Project Management and Technical Infrastructure

·         Beatrice Bucciarelli and Mario Lattanzi (OATo) visited STScI for four weeks, completing an initial draft of a paper describing GSCII.

·         Volpicelli completed writing a C++ program and Perl scripts to move data between the Objectivity and SQLserver.  Also installed an IIS web server for testing web user access.

·         Greene continued to support NVO activities.

MISSION SUPPORT

HST Operations

·         Reviewed 15 new Guide Star Problem Reports (GSPRs) this period.  Nine of these were fine lock failures.  Five other problems were loss-of-lock problems, and the remaining GSPR was a false lock.  In five of these six cases, the GS was fainter than expected. Filed a Bad GS Alert for each of the GSs.

·         Continuing the port of Getimage from VMS and UNIX to Windows NT.  Expect to overcome some recent problems quickly.

·         Updating the keywords of the header files.

·         Continued discussions with possible implementation of FASST/Share recommendations about improving HST astrometry using GSC-II. Met with CADC staff to discuss astrometry of WFC Associations

NGST Development Studies

                                      DIGITIZED SKY SURVEY

Plate Scanning

·         Continued scanning the POSS-I O (blue) survey plates on GAMMA1.

·         Received and scanned the last available POSSII N plate, one of the four North Pole plates.

·         The last major shipment of plates is in transit from ROE.  It contains 32 southern UKST IR plates and 14 northern IR (N) plates taken with the UK Schmidt Telescope in Australia. The latter set of plates will have the prefix “IN.”

GAMMA Microdensitometer Systems

·         Performed repairs on GAMMA2. The work centered on communications between the console and the servo box.  Restored communications and performed two test scans.  Analysis of the second test showed that the scan contained unacceptable shearing between passes and more adjustments will be necessary to bring the machine back into production.

·         GAMMA1 suffered a mechanical failure in the x-actuator mechanism.  Investigation showed that several other parts required replacement, including thrust bearings, metal strips, and brakes.  After the replacements were made, test scan analysis showed that further routine adjustments were required.  Made these adjustments and started a production scan August 1.

Data Compression/CD Production

·         Compressed and archived the last available POSSII N plate.

·         Continued CDROM copying as they are produced to the CASBRAIDTEC.

·         Replied to 3 helpdesk requests for support.

GSC-II

Plate Processing and COMPASS Database

·         As of 18-July-2002 there were 1,034,368,121 unique objects in the GSC2, which had grown to over 2 TB in size.

·         As of 31-July-2002, 5,442 GSC2 plates were loaded into the COMPASS database; 4971 of these plates are matched.

·         Continued to load and match both the northern and southern IR survey data.

·         Starting to load external reference catalogs into the COMPASS database for future recalibrations.

SOFTWARE

·         Continued the backup of CASB software currently on the Chart server to the Compass server and the re-organization of the development code.

·         Continued development of a program that will access the current GSC2 database and obtain information needed to create MCO files.  The MCO files will then be FTPed to a VMS system for reprocessing by existing GSC2 software.

·         Resolved a conflict between the use of namespaces in C++ and existing Objectivity database code.

·         Solved an inventory problem of an infrared plate with a massive airplane trail by masking out the trail.

CALIBRATIONS: Astrometry

·         OATo provided a list of regions for testing various proper motion routines at STScI.

CALIBRATIONS: Classification

CALIBRATIONS: Photometry (GSPC-II and DSS-I and -II)

·         Began copying the processed GSPC2 data from CDROM to the CASBRAIDTEC.

  • S1. Low priority program to rescan crowded fields (|b|<30) originally done with 25 mu scans.  The total number of S scans includes the 2 for the LMC and SMC plus 4 others with |b|>30 performed for research or STIS BOP support.  Another 30 plates have been added to replace those that were repaired before inclusion in DSS-I.
  • S2. This survey is an on-going low level-of-effort collaboration between the STScI and the AAO.
  • S3. Low priority scans of the POSS-I -24 deg and -30 deg zones.
  • S4. Includes recent scans of better grade plates.
  • S5.  Low priority scans of the moderately short exposure R plates from the SERC I/SR Atlas of the Milky Way.
  • S6.  Includes UKST-IR plates from the SERC I/SR Atlas of the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds (1978-1985) and the I-Survey of the Southern Sky (1990-xx).
  • S7. IR plates taken with the UK Schmidt to complete the POSSII-N Survey.
