Highlights for Division Meeting

· GSC 2.3 Export in progress

Community Affairs and Communications

· Lattanzi and Bucciarelli are visiting STScI from OATo to work on GSC-II and GSPC-II publications

· Planning visits to STScI by Spagna/Carollo (September/October)

· Finalized agreement with Southern Stars Systems to incorporate DSS2 images into a new amateur astronomy product.

Project Management and Technical Infrastructure

· Server to replace CHART has been received and awaiting CPT installation. Associated RAID arrays to hold CASB image archive have been received and awaiting installation.

MISSION SUPPORT

HST Operations

· Investigated 11 bad guide star alerts.

· Continued to develop software to update the keywords of the header files.

· HUGS2 test plan developed

NVO Development Studies

NGST Development Studies

DIGITIZED SKY SURVEY

Plate Scanning

· Continued scanning the POSS-I O (blue) survey plates.

GAMMA Microdensitometer Systems

· GAMMA1 A/D board under construction. Downtime expected to be another few weeks.

· Scanning continuing on GAMMA2 following mechanical maintenance and adjustments.

Data Compression/CD Production

· Continued processing the POSS-I O (blue) survey plates.

GSC-II

COMPASS Database

· New catalog matching code under development

· Export task is running – process expected to take several weeks

Calibrations

· Bucciarelli is preparing a new release of the GSPC-II

· Garcia preparing for a CTIO 0.9m GSPC-II observing run

Science

· D.Carollo (OATo) attended the IAU General Assembly in Sidney, where she presented the first results of the project carried out in collaboration with the STScI, the Institute of Astronomy (Cambridge) and the Capodimente Observatory (I) to search for halo WDs based on GSC2 material. A preliminary analysis seems to indicate that Pop.II WDs do contribute to the galactic dark matter with a fraction of about 0.1% which is much lower than the limit suggested by the microlensing experiments even though it is consistent with the standard models of the halo formation.

· Proper motions for the CRA field NGC 2422 have been derived by OATo staff.
