Highlights for Division Meeting

Community Affairs and Communications

· Ricky Smart from OATo visited STScI to work on GSC2 paper and data for science projects.

· Duncan Law-Green visited from the Leicester Archive Center to arrange transfer of DSS to a mirror site in the UK.

· Provided support for tour by visiting observatory business staff

Project Management and Technical Infrastructure

· Replaced another COMPASS RAID array disk that failed. NOTE – this array is 4 years old so should be replaced in FY05 ED05.

· Replaced two VMS RAID array disks that failed – this was on pipeline processing disks so all currently processing data was lost and had to be reprocessed. Thanks to Tom Walker (CPT) for his excellent support in restoring operations.

· VAX/VMS system GSSSA was restored into operation to support compression pipeline.

MISSION SUPPORT

HST Operations

· Investigated 2 GS failures – one was due to GS proper motion.

· Continued providing support to NGSS development team.

· Continued support of HST coordinates working group.

DIGITIZED SKY SURVEY

Plate Scanning

· Met with Imants Platais (JHU) to discuss scanning 4m plates to support an HST proposal

GAMMA Microdensitometer Systems

· Began procedures to fabricate plate holder for 8x10 4m plates.

Data Compression/CD Production

· Continued processing the POSS-I O (blue) survey plates

Data Archive

· Migration of VMS media to new RAID arrays in progress (25% complete)

GSC-II

COMPASS Database (N.Objects = 1,142,681,456, Export= 939,596,556)

· GSC 2.3 Release notes being revised to support NGSS development

· QA of export continuing at both STScI and OATo

· Continued loading of POSS QV plates and equatorial zones.

· Spagna presented a poster on data mining the GSC2 and related science projects at a meeting of the Italian Astronomical Society.
