GSC 1.1 Plate Material

The GSC was constructed from digital scans of the entire sky from the UK and Palomar Schmidt plates. This was supplemented by coordinates from the TYCHO/HIPPARCOS input catalog for stars brighter than 8th magnitude for which accurate plate measurements could not be made. A description of the GSC was published by Lasker et al 1990 A.J. 99, 2019-2154 and version 1.1 of the catalog released on CDROM in 1992.

The plate material used was the following :

Palomar "Quick-V" Survey
declination +3 to +90
limiting mag V=19
UKSTU SERC-J Survey
declination -90 to +3 [except crowded galactic plane]
limiting mag V=22
UKSTU "Short-V"
southern galactic plane
limiting magnitude V=16
Miscellaneous Special Plates

M31, LMC, SMC, etc
