The plate processing software that is currently being developed to process the second generation plate scans is primarily based on prototype code from earlier scientific projects (Galcat, Compression & ROSAT) along with some previously adopted utilities. The goal is to take the best features of this early work and integrate them so that we can QA the scans and generate the raw data for the creation of GSC-II, while building the CASB image archive and delivering compressed images to ESO and the community.

The software is being modified so that it will run on both first generation (PIM files) and second generation (VIM files) scan data. In addition, it is being written in either FORTRAN or C (and maybe C++ in the future) with earlier IDL code being rewritten. Another goal is to have both VAX and AXP versions for the code, however this is secondary as we are adding another AXP cpu for pipeline processing.
